Your voice for the voiceless - Yulin Dog Meat Festival

As an Animal Reiki Teacher and Practitioner, I am one for sharing love and compassion to others, all animals, humans and non-humans.  So even though I have exposed myself to the pain and suffering bestowed upon animals, throughout the world, I shall not be showing graphic images of what I wish to share with you this month.  I hope the words are enough to move you so that you can add your voice for the voiceless.

I want to bring your awareness to the Yulin Dog Meat Festival held each year from June 21st.  This is a festival over 10 days where dogs who have been bred or stolen from animal caregiver/parents like us, are abused, put into small cages with other dogs all squashed together in pain, struggling to breathe and this is only just the beginning.  They are used, abused, put into trucks, all cages stacked upon each other.  Their fate… to be tortured and cooked to sell at the festival.

I have included extracts from just two organisations who are trying to work with countries in Asia and with the Chinese government to not only change the laws but to ensure they are actioned by the people on the ground too.  There are many organisations trying to help.  You can add your voice by signing petitions from organisations such as these.  Should you wish to give any money, please do your own due diligence first before donating to any cause.

From the Humane Society International

Thank you for helping tackle cruelty, starting with Yulin’s annual dog meat festival.

On June 21st, Yulin’s annual dog meat festival began. While progress for animals has been made across China in response to issues brought to light due to the COVID-19 pandemic, brutal events like this continue, and we need to keep fighting until they end permanently.

This year, we were able to rescue a group of puppies from a terrible fate. Just ahead of the festival, our Chinese partners rescued these animals from a market stall selling live dogs. They are now being cared for by our partner shelter in China, where they’ll receive veterinary care, socialization and love before the search to find loving forever homes.

Action takers like you also sent a powerful message to Guangxi leaders through a petition with over 220,000 signatures calling for an end to the festival and the dog and cat meat trade.

What activists witnessed ahead of the festival indicates a shift in Yulin for animals. Most dog meat stalls and shops around the city were consolidated into one central area called the Nanchao market on the outskirts of Yulin. Centralizing dog meat trade activity could be the authorities’ attempt to make it easier to monitor and manage.

The government has also been cracking down on trans-provincial animal transport, meaning that it is more difficult to truck in large numbers of dogs than in year’s past.

Because of your support, lives were saved this year. Momentum is building in China to confront the dog and cat meat trade, and while Yulin’s horrific festival won’t end overnight, the tide is turning.

From Lady Freethinker

Dogs are being beaten, sliced open and blowtorched to a crisp right now for China's brutal Yulin Dog Meat Festival, a 10-day "celebration" of the summer solstice.

Dogs are being killed and roasted in Yulin this very minute, despite China's recent removal of dogs from the approved livestock list. That's why LFT is helping local rescuers save these innocent animals and provide the food, medicine and care that they so desperately need. But we can't do it without your support.

We will continue to help free dogs from slaughter. We will fight the dog and cat meat trade until this brutal industry is history!

Please remember ‘After the darkest hour, comes the light’.  Whilst we may feel sick, hurt and upset by events such as these, it is not a time to react in anger.  The more love and compassion we can share, the more healing and peace will spread across the planet.  Changes are happening and we can continue to share our light around this world.
