about animal reiki

Reiki is an ancient healing system which was rediscovered by Mikao Usui from Japan in the early 20th Century.  Reiki is a holistic therapy that treats the body, mind and soul.

The name is pronounced as ‘Ray-Key’.  Rei meaning ‘spirit’ and Ki meaning ‘energy’.  Reiki can also be translated as ‘universal life energy’.  As quantum physics tells us, all matter is energy.  When we breakdown the smallest of particles, there is only energy.  This energy flows through all living beings.

Reiki is a non invasive complementary therapy for health and well-being.  It is powerful and yet a gentle way to assist the body’s own healing process.  This is why reiki is a great supportive treatment to work alongside your own veterinary practice animal’s health plan.  Reiki is also a wonderful way to maintain your animal’s well-being throughout their life.

IMG_7630.JPG

As Reiki practitioners we create a quiet, safe space of peace.  All animals are sensitive to this energy flow and recognise our intent to share this space.  They have the choice to receive whatever healing they need most at that time of any session.  We connect with the flow of energy which is a loving, compassionate energy that opens our heart to heart connection.  This brings comfort to the physical, mental and emotional well-being of all animals.

WHY REIKI FOR ANIMALS

Animals communicate on a different level to us humans.  They have a deeper sense to energy and can easily detect our own energy.  I am sure your animal has come to you in time of need, they just seem to know.  We work so hard being caregivers to our animals we sometimes forget they too can show us important ways to stay healthy and happy.  Animals don’t have the same mindset as us humans and don’t become entangled in the day to day.  Reiki will go to the issue that needs it most, even issues we may not understand.

Reiki treatments are affective for animals suffering anxiety or fear as this helps them to trust, relax and rest.  Animals are deeply connected to their surroundings and they too can experience emotional trauma from losing a loved one, loss of a friend, moving home or from being in a shelter/rescue centre environment.

If your animal is suffering from physical pain, recovering from surgery or illness, reiki will help sooth symptoms and enable their bodies to rest and recoup.

IMG_8054.JPG

Reiki is known to also help animals become more relaxed and open to receive further therapies such as physiotherapy or hydrotherapy, so if your animal is fearful of people or anxious, reiki treatments can benefit in the first instance.

Reiki can do no harm to either recipient or practitioner.

An example of benefits for animals are:

  • Accelerate healing in sick, injured or recovering from surgery.

  • Help reduce pain and inflammation.

  • Induce relaxation and stress relief.  Ideal also for shelter/rescue facilities.

  • Lessen the side effects of other medical treatments.

In the energetic space of healing, signs of inner peace and relaxation take place.  Reiki treatments can also be beneficial for you, the animals’ caregiver.  By receiving a treatment with your animal, we create a peaceful, light space of healing for all.

By simply relaxing, being quiet, breathing and having a heartfelt intention to help another being, you create a sacred space.  In this space, all things are possible.

Meet sam

Samantha Roe - Animal Reiki Master/Teacher & Practitioner, Animal Reiki Care

Past

I’ve always been an animal lover and support a number of animal foundations worldwide.  I started a career in social care but that somehow led to over 20 years working in a customer service/corporate environment. Having built a business for someone else gave me a lot of pleasure and provided me with extensive experience. I was involved in leading its growth through effective operations, empowering people with training and coaching, providing outstanding customer service and building branches across the UK.  Its been an adventure but change has been a long time coming.  I needed to expand my horizon and it started with one question…

I was asked if I was a healer.  I first said no, then I actually stopped to think about this and realised I was, and this was before I even knew about reiki. Having dealt with a lot of family health matters, (animal and human) over the last 20 years I realised actions I had taken were a form of healing, especially for Lilly, my eldest cat who was born in 2002.

IMG_1432.JPG

Lilly

Lilly was involved in a road traffic accident and broke her pelvis in 3 places. After X-rays and knowing the extent of her injuries, the stand-in vet’s first comment was to put her to sleep. Having already had a dog, who was my first animal teacher but that’s another story, I knew there had to be another option. I asked what else can be done?

The vet explained the care needed. So Lilly had 6 weeks in a crate, with me turning her daily, giving her medication and the most important part was me sat with her every day letting her know she was safe, loved and would be walking and running again soon. And yes, for 16 years of her life, she continued to walk, run and jump like it never even happened!

That one question gave me the start to grow in another direction.  It also gave me insight to how I could work with animals.  I have studied the Japanese system of Reiki.  I have had the honour of studying with two teachers, so far, Lindsey Hadfield in the UK and Kathleen Prasad from the USA.

I completed my Level/Degree 1 and 2 (Shoden & Okuden) in the Usui reiki system of Natural Healing (the Usui Shiki Ryoho) with Lindsey.  Knowing my love and light for animals, it was Lindsey who lent me a book on animal reiki, written by Kathleen, which led me to learn even more.

Amongst other reiki courses, I completed my Level/Degree 3 (Shinpiden) and Teacher Training with Kathleen in the Usui Reiki Ryoho.  Kathleen is world renowned for her work in the field of Animal Reiki.  She founded Animal Reiki Source® which is a teaching society with a wealth of information and courses.  She has also developed the Let Animals Lead® method which is so effective whilst respecting each animal.

FullSizeRender+10.jpg

I am a member of The Confederation of Healing Organisations in the UK. I am also a member of SARA, the Shelter Animal Reiki Association, co-founded by Kathleen Prasad and Leah D’Ambrosio.  This is a non profit organisation whose mission is to educate animal rescue professionals and volunteers for the well-being of animals.  SARA educates across the world about the healing benefits of Reiki for rescued animals and their caregivers.  It is with their leadership, encouragement, knowledge and high ethical standards, that I have been able to develop my own practice and to teach and support others.

FullSizeRender%2B16.jpg

I have worked with all types of animals in family households, animal sanctuaries, foundations and rescue centres across the UK and worldwide.  I attend regular reiki shares and healing circles where all teacher & practitioners continue to learn from each other, whilst respecting the confidentiality and privacy of clients. Reiki has enhanced my life.  I can assist and support you in your care for your animals in a gentle and powerful practice.

Animal Reiki Treatment - what to expect

The ‘Let Animals Lead’® method is the approach our reiki practitioner uses.  This has far been the most successful way in offering animals the choice and freedom to choose how they wish to receive reiki.

The treatment may consist of a placement of hands on the body and/or your animal may prefer to come and go from the reiki space created.  Your animal may just stand, sit or lie down near the practitioner.  They may start to yawn and show signs of relaxation. Should your animal choose to have hands on, this is their choice it is never forced, it is all up to your animal and the healing is still received the same.

Should your animal have medical needs, you should always gain your Veterinary Practice’s permission, reiki should never be used instead of conventional medical care.

IMG_0212.JPEG

On Site

Your animals are most comfortable when they are in their familiar environment.  This could be in your home, barn or pasture.

It is not uncommon for you, the animal’s caregiver, to also share the reiki space of healing, for example through having a chair treatment, with your animal in the same area.  You will be seated whilst your animal is free to place themselves where they wish.  Or you can join through a guided meditation whilst the session for your animal is also taking place.  The meditation is designed to settle the body and mind and will assist in opening the heart connection of compassion.  Both options give you the opportunity to understand the reiki treatment and to participate with your animal, should you wish.  Or the treatment can be just between your animal and the practitioner.

As we continue the session, the reiki practitioner will focus on creating a sacred space of healing.  You may choose to stay and sit in this space or you may quietly move away to limit distractions.

A session can be booked for 30 minutes or 1 hour.  The time allocated will involve any discussions held with you before and after the treatment.

After the session has completed, the reiki practitioner will speak with you to share any insight given during the treatment.

Distant/Remote

We are all connected via energy and we ourselves use this, such as when we get a feeling about something or some intuition about a person or place.  Reiki uses this flow and does not require the practitioner to be in the same physical location as the animal and their companions.

You are also welcome to sit in the reiki space with your animal during the distant treatment for as long as you wish.

After the session has completed, the reiki practitioner will contact you to share any insight given during the treatment.

Session/Treatment timings

Should you be unsure which session time to use, we have some guidance below.

30 minute session; is a wonderful way to introduce an animal to the art of reiki.  If you are new to reiki yourself you may be more comfortable with an initial session being shorter.  This could then possibly be extended to an hour whilst on site or if inconvenient, a further longer session could be booked.

One hour session; this is an excellent amount of time to enable your animal to feel restful and relaxed.  Animals are deeply connected and they feel the energy around them and to the energy with their companions.  This length of time will show and help the animals fully harmonise with the reiki space created.

4 consecutive sessions;

It can be particularly useful to have four 30 minute sessions, in close succession, for any animal who is anxious, fearful or aggressive.  These animals need to have such time and consistency to enable trust.  Once trust has been built, they can begin to relax into the reiki energy and receive the comfort they need.

It can also be particularly beneficial for recovery after surgery, post trauma and/or chronic illnesses.

Any session timings can be discussed with the reiki practitioner when making your initial appointment.

Cost of reiki session for animals/animal & companion.

Postponement

Important information

Please note, reiki is not a substitute for veterinary care.  If your animal is injured or ill, always consult with your veterinary practice as soon as possible.  Reiki is a fantastic support to conventional medical treatment and to work alongside further holistic modalities.

We share reiki with them, but in my experience, I know that I’m probably going to receive even more healing than I can offer, because animals are so amazing in that way.

Soul & Spirit Magazine - April 2020

Thank you so much to Soul & Spirit magazine for the feature on Reiki & Animal Reiki. When I approached the magazine to see if they would be interested in Animal Reiki, they were totally awesome and open and put together a large 4 page article about reiki. I hoped to be able to educate the pubic on the benefits of animal reiki for ourselves & animals, to explain the difference between human reiki to animal reiki and all using the Let Animals Lead® method created by Kathleen Prasad. I was really happy to see a number of Practitioners included in the article to give a wide overview of our amazing healing work. The article may not feature everything I wanted but it is an excellent read and includes how reiki has helped my own health issues when I first started to learn reiki. There is time to buy a digital copy of the April’s issue which also includes ideas, inspiration and empowerment which can be useful during these challenging times, click learn more to take you straight to

Pawprint Magazine - Issue no.7 2019

St Giles Animal Rescue centre produce a wonderful magazine to keep us all updated and involved with the amazing work they do and their supporters. I was fortunate enough to be featured within their magazine about a scared and anxious cat named Cart who I supported with animal reiki during his stay waiting for a forever home. He came into the rescue centre petrified and stayed at the back of his enclosure and wouldn't move. My first reiki session saw him enter into a relaxed state whilst I was sat furthest away I could. Upon our second session I sat away from Cart and as I started the session, Cart jumped down and came up to me so I could stroke him. He had grown in strength & confidence in only 2 sessions of animal reiki. I was delighted to hear he was adopted shortly afterwards. Animal reiki helped him build trust and to be able to shine and show his personality in order for his new human caregivers/parents to offer him a forever home.
